Generator Installation
There are two honest routes to backup power, and they suit different situations. We install both, and the right answer depends on your budget and how much of the house you want running.
A standby generator is permanently installed outside, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts itself within seconds of an outage through an automatic transfer switch. You do not have to be home. A portable generator costs far less but requires you to be present, to run it outdoors well away from the house, and to connect it through a properly installed inlet and manual transfer switch. That inlet and switch is the part that matters — running a portable generator through an extension cord into an outlet backfeeds the utility lines and is genuinely dangerous to you and to line crews.
Either way, the work starts with deciding what actually needs to run. Whole-house backup is possible but sizing for it costs considerably more than covering the essentials — refrigeration, some lighting, a well pump, and enough air conditioning to keep the house habitable.
Standby installation involves the generator pad, the fuel connection, the transfer switch and the panel work. Gas piping is handled by a licensed gas fitter; we do the electrical side and coordinate the rest.
